Summary: AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat government has kept in abeyance its biggest employment drive in over two decades for filling more than 52,000 job vacancies till the time a larger bench of the Supreme Court pronounces its decision on the 10% Economically Backward Classes (EBC) quota ordinance of the state. The move is largely aimed at placating the Patidar votebank apart from the economically backward in the unreserved category. On Saturday, deputy CM Nitin Patel clarified, “We have stalled all recruitment processes till the Supreme Court decides on EBC quota issue. We don’t want a large section of youth who have applied for government jobs under EBC category be left out.” Deputy CM Nitin Patel said the process to recruit 17,000 teachers in government primary schools, 8,000 jobs in higher secondary schools, 17,000 police personnel and 10,000-odd jobs in various other government establishments has been stalled temporarily.Patel’s clarification came on the heels of a major confusion created after the government on Friday issued a notification putting implementation of the EBC quota ordinance in admissions and jobs on hold till SC directives. However, realising that it had sent a negative signal about the state government’s intention to stand by its resolve to implement the EBC quota, it issued another notification hours later cancelling the earlier one.
